The 7 Value Factor of Pearls

Did you know that pearls are graded based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors™

Pearls are graded on GIA’s seven value factors: size, shape, color, luster, surface, nacre quality, and matching. The “AAA–A” letter grades many sellers use are a producer or retailer convention, not a GIA standard — GIA does not issue AAA grades. Luster and nacre quality are each graded Excellent to Poor.

– size, shape, color, luster, surface, nacre and matching? Seen here, a pearl sorter is matching Tahitian cultured pearls into strands according to some of these value factors. Not only do these factors affect the beauty of a pearl, they affect the beauty of a strand of pearls. Typically, the more consistent these qualities are in a strand, the more beautiful and desirable the strand will be, although some strands also contain carefully-selected, graduated pearls of different sizes or shades of color! Image 2 shows South Sea and Tahitian pearls of ascending size and depth of color. Check out new GIA Cultured Pearl Classification Report to learn more.
