Pearl Grading Systems Guide — AAA, AA & A Explained
Pearl grading uses the AAA–AA–A scale, a producer and trade convention that ranks pearls mainly by luster and surface quality, with AAA the highest. It is important to understand that this scale is not a GIA standard — there is no single official pearl grade, so meanings vary between sellers. Knowing how the scale works, and what to ask, lets you compare pearls fairly across South Sea (Pinctada maxima), Tahitian (Pinctada margaritifera) and Akoya (Pinctada fucata) types.
What the AAA-AA-A scale measures
The scale bundles several quality factors — chiefly luster (how sharp and bright the reflection is) and surface cleanliness (how few blemishes), and often nacre quality, shape and matching. AAA is the top trade grade; AA is high quality with minor flaws; A is acceptable with more visible blemishes or softer luster.
| Grade | Luster | Surface |
|---|---|---|
| AAA | Very high, sharp reflections | Clean; few or no visible blemishes |
| AA | High | Minor blemishes over a small area |
| A | Medium to soft | More visible blemishes |
Why it is not a GIA standard
GIA does describe pearl quality using seven value factors (luster, surface, shape, size, colour, nacre and matching), but it does not issue an "AAA" letter grade. The AAA–AA–A letters are a separate trade shorthand created by producers and sellers. Because no central body enforces it, one seller's AAA may equal another's AA. Treat letter grades as a guide, not a guarantee, and judge luster and surface with your own eyes.
How to read grades and what to ask a seller
- Ask the seller to define their grades — what luster and surface each letter requires.
- Ask about nacre thickness; thin nacre dulls and wears faster.
- Confirm colour is natural (never dyed) and whether any treatment was applied.
- Confirm the pearls are cultured and disclosed as such.
- Compare actual luster and surface across pieces, not just the letters.
Putting grades in context
Grade interacts with size, shape and colour to set price. For the full picture see how much pearls are worth, and for shape's role see our pearl colour guide. To compare graded pearls, browse Akoya pearls.
Frequently asked questions
Is AAA an official pearl grade? No. AAA, AA and A are producer/trade grades for luster and surface. They are not a GIA standard, so definitions differ between sellers — always ask what a grade means.
Does GIA grade pearls? GIA describes pearls using seven value factors but does not assign the AAA letter grade. The letters come from the trade, not from GIA.
What single factor matters most? Luster. A pearl with sharp, bright luster looks alive even with minor surface marks, while dull luster cannot be fixed by a high letter grade.
