Pearls from Tahiti — Natural Black Tahitian Pearls
Pearls from Tahiti — Tahitian pearls — are grown by the black-lipped oyster Pinctada margaritifera in the lagoons of French Polynesia. They are the only naturally dark cultured pearls, with body colours from soft gray to deep black and remarkable overtones of peacock, green, blue and aubergine. Typically 8–14mm, their dark drama and natural colour make them unmistakable. Crucially, this colour is entirely natural — Tahitian pearls are never dyed.
How the dark colour forms naturally
The black-lipped Pinctada margaritifera lines the inside of its shell with dark nacre. As the oyster deposits layer upon layer of this nacre around the nucleus, the pearl takes on its naturally gray-to-black body colour. The shimmering peacock, green and aubergine overtones come from the way light interferes within those translucent nacre layers — a structural, natural effect, not a treatment.
Colour and overtone
Body colour ranges from light dove-gray to near-black. Overtones are where Tahitians shine: peacock (a green-to-magenta blend) and aubergine (a wine-purple) are the most coveted and occur only in genuine Tahitian pearls. Because the colour is natural, no two strands match exactly. See the pearl colour guide for an overtone breakdown.

How Tahitians compare
Tahitian pearls are darker and larger than Akoya pearls and offer colours no white pearl can. To weigh them against white and golden pearls, read South Sea vs Tahitian pearls.
Value and where to see them
Value is driven by overtone (peacock and aubergine command premiums), size, luster, roundness and surface. Producer grades like AAA, AA and A describe luster and surface but are a trade convention, not a GIA standard. Browse our loose Tahitian pearls to see the colour range.
Frequently asked questions
Are Tahitian pearls dyed black? No. The dark colour and peacock or aubergine overtones are entirely natural, produced by Pinctada margaritifera. Cheap, solid-black uniform "pearls" are usually colour-treated freshwater pearls — a different product.
What is a peacock pearl? A Tahitian pearl with a green-to-magenta overtone over a dark body. Peacock and aubergine occur only in genuine Tahitian pearls and are the most sought-after colours.
How big are Tahitian pearls? Usually 8–14mm, larger than Akoya and comparable to South Sea pearls. Larger sizes with strong overtone are rarer and more valuable.
