South Sea Pearl Price Guide — White & Golden by Size

South Sea pearl prices are driven by size, grade, luster, surface and — for golden pearls — color depth. Grown by Pinctada maxima, the largest pearl oyster, single round pearls range indicatively from around $200 at 9–10mm to several thousand dollars at 15–16mm, with deep-golden pearls commanding the highest premiums. Grades AAA, AA and A are producer/trade descriptions, not a GIA standard. All color is natural and never dyed. Ranges below are indicative only.

Indicative price by size and grade

Typical ranges for a single round white South Sea pearl, in US dollars. Golden pearls of equal quality usually sit at the top of, or above, these ranges depending on color saturation.

Size Grade A Grade AA Grade AAA
9–10mm $120–250 $200–450 $350–800
10–11mm $180–400 $320–700 $550–1,300
11–13mm $300–700 $550–1,300 $1,000–2,800
13–15mm $600–1,500 $1,200–3,000 $2,500–6,500
15–16mm+ $1,200–3,000 $2,500–6,000 $5,000–15,000+

Strands multiply these figures: a fully matched AAA white or deep-golden South Sea strand is a major luxury piece, not a financial instrument.

What drives South Sea pearl value

  • Size — South Sea pearls are the largest cultured pearls; price climbs sharply past 13mm and 15mm+ is rare.
  • Color — white (silver-lipped Pinctada maxima) and golden (gold-lipped). Deep, even gold is the rarest natural color and carries a strong premium; never dyed.
  • Grade — AAA is near-flawless with high luster; AA high with minor marks; A visible imperfections. Trade grades, not a GIA standard.
  • Luster & nacre — thick nacre gives the soft, satiny glow that defines South Sea pearls.
  • Shape & matching — round and well-matched pearls cost most, especially in a strand.

Where to buy and what to check

Choose a seller who specifies species, origin (Australia, Philippines, Indonesia or Myanmar), color variety and grade. For golden pearls, ask whether the color is natural — fine golden South Sea pearls are never dyed; cheap uniform "golden" pearls are usually treated freshwater pearls. Look for thick nacre and a deep glow rather than a thin, hard shine.

Frequently asked questions

Why are South Sea pearls so expensive? Pinctada maxima is difficult to farm, grows slowly and produces the largest pearls with thick nacre. Size, rarity and natural color — especially deep gold — drive the high prices.

Are golden South Sea pearls naturally colored? Yes. Fine golden pearls take their color from the gold-lipped oyster and are never dyed. The deeper and more even the gold, the higher the value.

Will South Sea pearls hold or grow in value? We do not describe pearls as financial assets or promise any return. They are cultured luxury jewelry meant to be worn. Grades such as AAA are trade descriptions, not a GIA standard.
