Pearls from Indonesia — Golden & White South Sea Pearls

Pearls from Indonesia are South Sea pearls grown by Pinctada maxima across the country's vast tropical archipelago, and Indonesia is the world's leading producer of golden South Sea pearls. Grown in the gold-lipped variety of the oyster, these pearls range from soft champagne to deep, saturated 24-karat gold — a colour that is entirely natural and never dyed. Indonesia also produces white South Sea pearls, with typical sizes of 9–15mm and the soft, deep luster of thick nacre.

Why Indonesia leads golden pearl production

The gold-lipped variety of Pinctada maxima thrives in Indonesia's warm, nutrient-rich seas, and the country's huge spread of islands gives farmers many ideal lagoons. Decades of selective culturing have refined the golden strains, so Indonesia supplies the majority of the world's natural golden South Sea pearls, from pale champagne through to the prized deep gold.

Golden and white colour — all natural

Golden pearls take their colour from the gold-lipped oyster's nacre; white pearls come from the silver-lipped variety. Both colours are natural and never dyed — depth of gold is the key value driver, with rich, even, deep-gold pearls the rarest. Learn more in our pearl colour guide.

What drives value

For golden pearls, depth and evenness of colour matter most, alongside size, luster, roundness and surface. A large, deeply golden, round pearl is rare and commands the highest prices. White Indonesian pearls follow the standard South Sea value factors. See how much pearls are worth for detail.

Frequently asked questions

Are golden Indonesian pearls dyed? No. The golden colour comes naturally from the gold-lipped Pinctada maxima and its nacre — it is never dyed. Uniform, unnaturally bright "gold" pearls sold cheaply are usually colour-treated freshwater pearls.

How big do Indonesian pearls get? Most fall between 9 and 15mm, with exceptional pearls larger. They are far bigger than Akoya and similar in scale to other South Sea pearls.

Is deep gold worth more than champagne? Generally yes. Rich, even, deep-gold colour is rarer and more sought after than pale champagne, so it carries a premium when size and luster are equal.
