How to compare pearl sizes accurately

Pearl size is normally stated as diameter in millimetres. A one-millimetre increase sounds small, but a round pearl gains volume in three dimensions, so the visual jump from 8 mm to 10 mm is much stronger than the number suggests. Use the calibration step against a standard bank card before treating the on-screen circle as actual size.

What is a classic pearl earring size?

About 7–8 mm is a familiar everyday range for pearl studs. Pearls around 9–10 mm read more clearly as a statement, while South Sea and Tahitian pearls frequently extend into larger sizes. There is no universal best size: face proportions, setting, hair and personal style all affect the result.

Are pearls measured by diameter?

Round pearls are usually listed by diameter. Near-round, oval, drop and baroque pearls may be described with two or three measurements because their width, length and depth differ. Always compare measurements within the same pearl type; typical Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea size ranges are not identical.

What this visualizer can and cannot show

The simulator is useful for scale and side-by-side comparison. It cannot reproduce lustre, surface character, colour, weight or the way a setting changes the apparent size. Screen calibration also depends on measuring the reference card correctly. For a final purchase, confirm the seller’s measured range and view photographs of the exact piece when available.

Why two 10 mm pearls can look different

Shape, setting and contrast matter. A bright round pearl in a minimal stud can appear larger than a lower-contrast pearl surrounded by metal. Drop pearls are often quoted with a longer vertical dimension, so compare the full measurement rather than assuming the first number tells the whole story.
