Drilled vs Undrilled Pearls: What to Buy
Choose fully drilled pearls for stringing or suitable through-pin designs, half-drilled pearls for compatible peg settings, and undrilled pearls when the jeweller should determine the orientation and hole specifications. No format is inherently better or more valuable: the right purchase is the pearl whose drilling, dimensions, condition, and visible face suit the intended jewel.
What is the difference between drilled, half-drilled, and undrilled pearls?
A fully drilled pearl has a hole that passes through it, creating two openings. A half-drilled, or part-drilled, pearl has a hole that enters the pearl without passing through it. These descriptions concern preparation for jewellery. They do not establish whether a pearl is natural or cultured, identify its mollusk species, disclose treatments, or determine its quality. Cultured pearls are real pearls. South Sea cultured pearls are associated with Pinctada maxima, while Tahitian cultured pearls are associated with Pinctada margaritifera.

Which pearl format suits the jewellery you want?
Work backward from the finished jewel. A strand normally requires a continuous passage through each pearl. A peg-mounted stud normally requires a blind hole aligned so the pearl faces correctly. A pendant or drop may use a half-drilled peg, a through-pin construction, or a setting designed around the individual pearl.
- For a strand: confirm that the holes accept the intended thread or wire and that their rims will not create an obvious abrasion point.
- For a pair: compare the drilling axes as well as size, shape, color, luster, and surface.
- For a drop: check how the pearl hangs when supported on the proposed axis.
- For a ring: let the setting jeweller assess the pearl, peg, cup, and protective design together.
Baroque and other asymmetrical pearls make orientation especially important. A hole that is geometrically off-centre may be intentional if it presents a more attractive face or produces the intended hang. Conversely, a neat-looking central opening may still place a surface feature prominently or make a drop lean.
Should you buy pearls before choosing the setting?
You can, but undrilled pearls preserve more options while the design remains unsettled. If you already have drilled pearls, ask the jeweller to design around their actual axes and dimensions rather than assuming the holes can be altered. How should you inspect pearl drill holes before buying?
Request clear, close photographs of every opening and, where relevant, the pearl viewed along its drilling axis. Inspect the rim and surrounding surface under diffused light and magnification. An online image can reveal visible defects, but it cannot confirm internal alignment or exact dimensions.
Check for:
- visible chips, cracks, flaking, or rough edges around the opening;
- old adhesive, residue, staining, or another apparent obstruction;
- openings that do not appear aligned on a fully drilled pearl;
- a hole position that presents an unsuitable face or interrupts the intended silhouette;
- missing measurements for hole diameter and, for half-drilled pearls, depth.
Do not insert an improvised metal tool to test or clear a hole. Ask the setting jeweller to inspect the pearl and finding together. A hole can look clean yet be too narrow, too wide, too shallow, or poorly directed for the proposed hardware.
Can photographs prove that a hole is well drilled?
No. Photographs can support screening, but they cannot establish the complete internal path, structural condition, or fit with a specific peg, wire, or thread. Obtain measurements and make the purchase conditional on specialist inspection when compatibility is essential.
Are undrilled pearls more valuable than drilled pearls?
Not automatically. Undrilled pearls retain orientation and setting options, but drilling status is not a complete quality grade. GIA assesses nacreous pearls using seven value factors: size, shape, color, luster, surface, nacre quality, and matching where applicable. Its framework does not award an A–AAA retail grade. A competently drilled pearl may be more useful for a specific strand or setting than an undrilled alternative. Poor positioning or damage around a hole can limit use, while a well-placed hole may support the intended design. Compare pearls of the same type by their relevant value factors, condition, matching, disclosed treatment status, drilling specifications, and fitness for purpose.

Do peacock or aubergine colors identify quality?
No. Those terms belong specifically to Tahitian or black-pearl color descriptions, not to pearl drilling or a universal quality grade. Why should a pearl specialist perform new drilling?
Drilling permanently removes material. The operator must select the visible face and axis, secure the curved pearl, match the hole to the intended finding, and control the work around a layered organic gem. An unsuitable position, direction, or hole dimension may be impossible to correct without changing the design.
Workshop sequencing also matters. Pearls require protection from heat and chemicals used in some jewellery operations. The jeweller should therefore plan drilling, metalwork, setting, finishing, and future servicing as one process.
Can a half-drilled pearl be drilled all the way through?
Sometimes a specialist may determine that extension is suitable, but it should never be assumed. The existing hole’s direction, depth, condition, proposed exit point, and final construction must first be assessed. If the axis is unsuitable, another setting may be the better choice.
