Cold winters in Japan slow Perlmutt Ablagerung, producing tighter, denser Perlmutt layers. This is why Akoya-Perlen have such sharp Spiegel reflections — the layered structure refracts light more uniformly than thicker, faster-grown Perlmutt. The trade-off: Akoya Perlmutt is thinner insgesamt (0.4-0,8 mm vs 2–6 mm for Südsee), so they require more careful handling.

3. Hanadama: the top tier
