Why choose a pearl over a diamond?

The honest part: pearls are soft

Here is what most engagement-ring articles will not tell you. A pearl is soft, around 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, where a diamond is 10. It can scratch against keys and counters, and it does not love hand sanitiser, perfume or cleaning chemicals. A Tahitian pearl ring is a beautiful choice, but it is a with-care choice, not a knock-about everyday band.

How to choose one that lasts

Pick luster first, the same rule as any pearl: a sharp, bright reflection ages far better than a soft glow. Then size for the hand, usually 9 to 11 millimetres for a ring, large enough to matter without catching on everything. Choose a colour you both love in daylight, and insist on a protective setting in solid gold. Done right, it lasts a lifetime of careful wear.
