光沢 is the ほとんど important grading criterion. It is 何 distinguishes a 美しい 真珠 from a dull one — and it is the trait that ほとんど clearly separates 本物の 真珠 from imitations.

何 is 真珠 光沢?

光沢 is the depth and sharpness of light reflection from the 真珠 表面. It is 作成済み by light refracting through the layered 真珠層 — microscopic platelets of aragonite separated by conchiolin protein layers. The より太い and more 均一の the 真珠層, the deeper the 光沢.

光沢 grades

• Excellent / Mirror — sharp, 鏡面-like reflection. You can see your own outline clearly in the 真珠. Found only in highest-グレード 真珠 (通常 AAA).
• Very Good / High — bright, clear reflection but slightly less sharp. Reflections of bright objects (windows, lights) are clearly 目視可能な but slightly diffused.
• Good — 目視可能な reflection but softer; you can see object outlines but not crisp details.
• Fair — 表面 appears bright but reflections are blurred or diffused.
• Poor — chalky or matte appearance; reflections are unclear or absent.

The window test

Hold a 真珠 6 インチ from a window. The window's reflection appears in the 真珠. The sharper the window outline you see, the より高い the 光沢 グレード. Mirror 光沢 shows the window clearly. Good 光沢 shows it as a soft outline. Poor 光沢 shows it as a vague glow.

光沢 by 真珠 種類

• アコヤ (日本製): highest 鏡面 光沢 of all 真珠. Cold winters slow 真珠層 deposition, producing tighter denser layers.
• タヒチ: deep 光沢 with オーバートーン shifts; excellent reflection in AAA（生産者分類）.
• 南洋: deep, soft, satin-like 光沢; the glow appears to come from 内部 the 真珠.
• Freshwater: variable; AAA freshwater can rival アコヤ in 光沢, but ほとんど freshwater is "Good" グレード or below.

何 dulls 光沢

• Chemicals — perfume, hairspray, lotions, makeup all coat 真珠層 and reduce reflection
• Body oils and sweat — accumulate over time without proper cleaning
• Improper storage — dehydration causes 真珠層 to lose its layered 組織
• Age (in 安い-品質 真珠) — thin 真珠層 dulls over decades; thick 真珠層 (南洋) maintains 光沢 for generations

Restoring 光沢

Mild 光沢 loss can be restored:

1. Clean with mild soap and distilled water
2. 拭く with soft microfiber cloth
3. 適用 小 amount of mineral oil with cotton ball, then バフ dry (希少/special ピース only)

Severe 光沢 loss (chalky 表面) cannot be restored — the 真珠層 layers have been compromised.
